International and domestic quay walls will support the relocation of Malé Commercial Harbour

Malé, 20 July 2026 – Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has awarded China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) the contract to develop the international and domestic quay walls at Thilafushi as part of the Malé Commercial Harbour relocation project. The agreement was signed by Chief Executive Officer Captain Hussain Shafeeq on behalf of MPL and Country Manager Mao Bao representing CHEC.

Under the agreement, CHEC will construct a 375 metre international quay wall with a depth of 14.6 metres to accommodate container vessels and develop an 820 metre domestic quay wall with a depth of 5 metres for vessels operating withing the Maldives.

The project is scheduled for completion on 11 November 2027, providing a long term solution to the congestion at Malé Commercial Harbour. Upon completion, Thilafushi Harbour will feature an international terminal with more than 1,000 metres of quay wall, as well as a domestic terminal with a 2,000 metre quay to serve vessels currently operating from Malé North Harbour and the South West Harbour.
